About This Work
Rootwork in Hoodoo is practical folk magic: it uses herbs, roots, and other traditional methods to help achieve a desired outcome. Divination helps reveal patterns, influences, and challenges in your life, while rootwork provides tangible, action-focused ways to address them. Together, these approaches allow a session to uncover what is happening internally and externally, giving guidance that is grounded and actionable.
In Hoodoo, there are generalists and specialists. General practitioners handle a wide range of needs, whereas specialists develop deep skill in specific arenas, whether by natural inclination, training from elders, or community reputation. The rootwork I do is generalist in nature.
I also work with methods sometimes referred to in Hoodoo as “left-hand” and “right-hand” practices. Right-hand work supports protection, healing, and beneficial outcomes, while left-hand work can be used to remove obstacles or address challenging situations, such as clearing negative influences, attracting love or money, or protecting yourself. In other spiritual traditions, these might be called blessings versus banishing or clearing work. All methods are applied with the client’s goals and well-being as the focus.
My divination work falls into the specialist side of the tradition. I focus on exploring a person’s relationships or their inner world, including the emotional patterns, past experiences, and internal dynamics shaping what someone is living through. These readings work best when someone comes in without giving much detail and allows the session to unfold naturally.
The tools of Hoodoo divination—such as playing cards, bones, or other traditional methods—help open the door, but the heart of the work is recognizing what someone is carrying internally. The readings often bring forward unspoken fears, long-standing beliefs, emotional patterns, past experiences that still influence the present, or ways of thinking that shape relationships and life choices.
Rather than answering direct questions, the work follows what rises on its own. This approach allows a clearer and more honest picture to emerge than trying to force a specific topic. By letting the reading speak first, it becomes easier to see how past experiences connect to current choices, where certain habits or mindsets are affecting relationships, and what emotional pressures are shaping your situation. The goal is not prediction—it’s understanding. Understanding what’s active beneath the surface often leads to the clarity needed for change, decision-making, or simply feeling more grounded in what’s really happening.
You’ll find a more detailed outline of the areas we can explore through divination later on this page, but at its core, this work helps connect the past and the present so you can move forward with greater awareness and steadiness.

Session Examples
Divination Only
A client comes in seeking clarity about a recurring pattern of feeling undervalued in relationships. During the session, I use Hoodoo divination tools such as playing cards or bones to explore the client’s emotional patterns and past experiences. Through the reading, it becomes clear that the client has a tendency to over-prioritize others’ needs and ignore their own boundaries, which has led to repeated difficulties in friendships and romantic relationships.
The client chooses not to pursue rootwork at this time. The session focuses entirely on reflection and insight: identifying these patterns, understanding how past experiences shape current behaviors, and uncovering thought processes and emotional blocks. By the end of the session, the client leaves with actionable strategies for setting boundaries and awareness of how their past continues to influence their present relationships.
Divination + Optional Rootwork
A client comes in concerned about ongoing challenges in attracting a romantic partner. During the divination session, patterns emerge: the client is carrying emotional baggage from a past relationship, self-doubt, and a fear of vulnerability that influences how they engage with others.
The client opts to also include rootwork. Using Hoodoo practices, I create a love-attraction and self-empowerment rootwork ritual, which may involve:
Herbal charms or mojo bags containing roots, herbs, and symbolic items chosen to attract healthy love and confidence.
Anointing oils applied to candles or charm items to amplify intention.
Focused prayers or spoken intention work to align the client’s energy with the desired outcome.
Cleansing or protective work to remove residual energy from past relationships that might block new connections.
The divination informs exactly what the rootwork targets — for example, which beliefs or emotional patterns need clearing, or what energies to attract. By the end, the client leaves with insight into their relational patterns through divination, and tangible, practical rootwork tools supporting their desired outcome in love and self-confidence.
Rootwork Only
A client begins by submitting a rootwork request through the form. In that request, they share the situation they’re navigating and the outcome they hope to achieve. Within 72 hours, I review their submission and consult with my spirits and ancestors to determine whether I am the right practitioner for their working at this time.
If I am able to move forward, the client receives an email with a link to schedule a phone call. This call is our chance to talk through the situation in more depth, clarify intentions, and make sure they understand what the working may involve.
After that conversation, I take private time to divine the best approach for their rootwork. Once the divination is complete, I send a follow-up email with the option to continue. If the client chooses to proceed, they can complete payment and we finalize the plan.
Using Hoodoo practices, I create a ritual tailored to the client’s situation and goals, which may include:
Herbal charms or mojo bags containing roots, herbs, and symbolic items selected to support their intentions. If something needs to be worn, carried, or used at home, I’ll arrange to send it.
Anointing oils used on candles, charms, or other ritual materials to strengthen and direct the work.
Focused prayers or spoken intention work that align the working with the client’s needs.
Cleansing, protection, or uncrossing work when blockages, heavy energy, or interference need to be removed before progress can be made.
The rootwork unfolds according to both the client’s goals and what the divination reveals, ensuring the working addresses the patterns and energies most relevant to their situation. Clients leave the process knowing exactly what to expect, what outcome we are aiming for, and what (if anything) they may need to do on their end.
✺ Frequently asked questions ✺
-
No. My readings work best as general sessions. You don’t need to prepare a question — the insights come forward naturally from what is active in your life and relationships.
-
I focus on readings that explore relationships and your inner world — emotions, thought patterns, past experiences, and how these influence your current situation. I do not offer direct question-based readings at this time.
-
I use traditional Hoodoo divination tools, such as playing cards, bones, or other methods. These tools help reveal patterns and messages, but the reading is about the insights that naturally arise, not the tools themselves.
-
No. The goal is understanding and clarity. The reading highlights what’s happening beneath the surface so you can move forward with awareness, not to predict the future.
-
Divination helps identify patterns, influences, or challenges in your life, while rootwork provides practical, outcome-focused methods to address them. Together, they allow insight to translate into action in a grounded, effective way.
-
In Hoodoo, “right-hand” work is focused on positive, protective, or beneficial outcomes, while “left-hand” work can be used to challenge or remove obstacles, including difficult influences. In other spiritual traditions, these might be thought of as “blessing vs. banishing” work. All work is done intentionally and ethically, with your goals in mind.
-
You don’t need to prepare anything. Just come open to whatever comes up during the session. Being relaxed and receptive helps the reading flow most clearly.
-
My work combines Hoodoo rootwork and divination, using methods that address both protective or beneficial needs as well as challenging situations. Rootwork is practical folk magic, meaning any work done with roots or other traditional methods is aimed at achieving a specific, desired outcome. In other spiritual practices, these approaches might be called cleansing, energy work, or spellwork.
-
A: Readings may highlight emotional or relational patterns that affect all areas of life, including health or finances, but they do not replace medical, legal, or financial advice.
-
Rootwork is practical folk magic aimed at achieving specific outcomes, but like all divination and spiritual work, results depend on multiple factors, including timing, intention, and the actions taken in daily life. Work done in a session is meant to support and amplify your efforts, not replace them.
